Funtington’s Heroes

This small booklet was put on sale after the Remembrance Sunday Service 2014 in an attempt to provide a background to the people whose names appear on the War Memorials within the civil parish of Funtington, located in St. Mary’s Churchyard, Funtington and in St. Andrew’s Church, West Stoke. Apart from a few personal recollections, the majority of information to date has been culled from available public records but there remain gaps, some small and some total. A little of this could result from incorrectly reading the inscriptions on the memorials; for example the C and G letters appear extremely similar. Also, it might be possible that some letters on the Funtington Memorial may have gone missing over time.

As well as the Surname, details included in the booklet where available and pertinent are Full forenames, Rank, Service number, Unit and Sub unit, Dates and Places of Birth, Marriage and Death, Parents and Spouse’s names, Civilian occupation, Place of Burial, Other places of commemoration, Connection to Funtington (not now always obvious) and any other pertinent comments.

Names that have proved particularly difficult to positively identify include:

C Cochrane       C S Yates (or should it be G S ?)

R M Dougall (or should it be R McDougall ?)     A Turner

Nick La Hive, who has collated the information, would be most grateful to receive any details about the above individuals or anyone else mentioned on the memorials. Any corrections to the other entries would also be much appreciated. He can be contacted on .
