LADIES 1s VERSUS SUDBURY

Bromley and Beckenham Ladies 1s vs Sudbury, league, home, Saturday 1st December 2007
Won: 1-0
Scorer: Emma Greenway

Having gone 5 league games without a win, Bromley and Beckenham were in desperate need of a win to start putting some distance between themselves and the relegation zone. The opposition this week was second placed Sudbury who we knew from last season were a physical and well organized unit. We were going to have to be on top form to come away with the 3 points.

A magical move straight from push back set the scene for how we were to going to approach this game. A slick set of perfect passing from Anna Frizoni to Sophie Davies to Emma Shepherd to Emma Greenway and then finally to Louise Fox for a first time shot was wonderful to see, and only a brave save by the keeper prevented us from taking the lead in the opening seconds of the match. For the next 10-15minutes or so we were in complete control of the match and I don’t think Sudbury knew what had hit them. We were playing some beautiful hockey and thankfully this week we managed to make the most of our possession and put the ball in the back of the net. Tash Kenny drove forward from the right back position and crossed in to Emma Greenway at the far post. The first time shot was well saved but Greenway was on hand to pick up the rebound and scored on the second attempt. For the rest of the half we continued to push forward, with Sophie Davies having a particularly influential game on the right hand side of midfield both in attack and defence. Although we were in control, it wasn’t all one way traffic and the defence had to be as alert as ever to deal with any quick breaks, which they did so efficiently. We went in to half time with our lead deservedly intact.

The second half was a slightly different story with Sudbury throwing everything at us in an attempt to get the equaliser. However, we began our defence from the front and pressurised every pass that was made, causing Sudbury to concede possession on several occasions. When Sudbury did get in to our half then the defence and midfield were excellent. Alison Fox in goal was particularly outstanding and won man of the match for two delicious diving saves to prevent the equaliser. We weren’t without our chances at the other end and some luscious leading by the forwards and pin point through balls by the midfield created several opportunities for us to extend our lead. In the end though no more goals were scored and the final result was 1-0 to BromBeck... An excellent game that was played in the right spirit by both sides.

It was an outstanding performance by the whole team and one that everyone can be extremely proud of. I spoke to Mrs G this morning and she said that everyone’s determination and effort was exceptional and I have to agree. Well done us! Thanks must also go to many supporters who braved the cold to cheer us on… we really appreciate it!

We are now in 6th place and our final league game before Christmas is next Saturday against Bury St Edmunds away. If we can get another 3 points here and results go our way then we could go in to the Christmas break in 3rd which would put us in a strong position for the second half of the season. Bring it on!
