Ladies 1s versus Bury St Edmonds
Bromley Beckenham v Bury St Edmonds
Score 3 - 0
Scorers - Emma Greenway, Emma Shepherd, Sarah Crosley
Man of the Match: Sarah Phelps
Damp, dank, dark, drizzly, dismal, wet and windy, are some words which only partly convey the conditions at which Bromley Beckenham found themselves playing in at a place north of the Watford Gap called Bury St Edmonds. (those who want to know why Bury is named after a saint look at this website http://www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk/sebc/visit/stedmund.cfm)
Bromley Beckenham battled hard in the first half and despite Bury St Edmonds having several goal attempts which were brilliantly saved by keeper Alison Fox, managed to put the first goal away and take the lead with a magnificently struck solo effort from Sarah Crosley. This was followed by a very slick short corner routine with Anna Frizoni striking wide from the top of the Dee for Emma Greenway to touch away for the second goal. This is the way it stayed until half time.
The second half saw much of the same, with Bromley & Beckenham acquiring the 3 goal lead from a cross into the Dee and a first time strike at goal from Emma Shepherd. There was a scare when the conditions got really wet and dark where the umpires threatened they may call of the match due to poor lights but thankfully everybody endeavoured to keep playing and this loathsome event did not happen. 3-0 was the end score.
It wasn't a particularly pretty game of hockey, some may say Bromley & Beckenham won as a result of natural heterosis, others may argue it was a mixture of grit and determination, interplayed with a dabble of skill.
