Ladies 1s versus Ipswich
Bromley and Beckenham Ladies 1s vs Ipswich 2s, away, league, Saturday 24th November 2007
Drew: 3-3
Scorers: Anna Frizoni x2, Tash Kenny
On a bitterly cold winter’s day, Bromley and Beckenham Ladies 1s trekked to bottom-of-the-table Ipswich 2s. Despite their lowly league position, we had heard rumours that Ipswich were a good side and one that we needed to treat with respect. This was to be proven correct as we found ourselves 2-0 down within the opening 25 minutes. As is becoming an increasingly bad habit of late, we once again leaked goals that were against the run of play and failed to make the most of our domination in possession. To give Ipswich their due they took their chances well and although they may not have deserved to be leading, they took their 2 goal lead in to the break.
We were rather desolate at half time as it is incredibly frustrating to keep controlling games but not making the most of it. However, we were all determined that we hadn’t come all this way to freeze and go home as losers!
We started the second half strongly and it wasn’t long before we had a pulled a goal back. Lucy Shepherd threaded a lovely ball through to Emma Greenway who was left one-on-one with the keeper. The keeper came out and collided with Greenway, completely taking the player and missing the ball, leaving the umpire no choice but to award a flick. I didn’t actually see the flick as was too busy trying to stop seeing double! But Tash Kenny bravely stood up to take it and slipped it home with ease. Our confidence was now renewed and we ceased control of the game once again. We pushed forward more and more and any counter attacks were swiftly dealt with by our defence with man of the match, Chris McNeill, putting in some particularly good tackles. A few minutes later and we were level. This time Kenny turned provider with a driving run from defence and into our attacking D. Her shot was deflected but only as far as to Anna Frizoni who made no mistake in picking up the rebound and slotting in from close range. It was now game on and I genuinely believed we were going to take away 3 points. However, this soon looked to be in jeopardy as Ipswich broke quickly and we conceded a somewhat scrappy goal. In a matter of minutes the tables had turned and it was now Ipswich who were full of confidence and were pushing for a fourth. It was only an excellent short corner save from Ali Fox in goal that prevented them achieving this. From the resulting clearance BromBeck charged up the pitch and the ball was given to Frizoni in the centre. Frizoni then set a captain’s example with an excellent individual goal for our equaliser – silkily skinning their defence and cracking her shot into the far left hand corner to make it 3-3. With only a few minutes left on the clock this was to be final goal of the game and the points were shared.
Another frustrating game that I really feel we should have won. We remain in 8th place but are only 3 points behind 3rd place, which shows how tight it is in this league. Next week we are at home to 2nd placed Sudbury – let’s hope we can show what we’re made of and get back to winning ways. 2.30pm push back at Langley so any support would be more than welcome as always!
