Ladies 4s versus Blackheath 2s
League Saturday 27th October
Score: Won 1-0
Scorer: Jo Mcleave
Man of the match: Jo Mcleave
Lack of availability left us with an interesting team selection of 6 forwards, 2 midfield, 2 defenders, a goalkeeper and no subs! The excellent team spirit ensured we had plenty of volunteers to play out of position and to the credit of Daisy Ridout, Deborah Sawyer, Suzy Cole and Alex Bezant they all played extremely well in their unaccustomed positions.
Bromley and Beckenham totally dominated the game forcing a succession of penalty corners, which Blackheath scrambled off the line bravely and with more than a little luck.
Bethan Dixon excelled at right midfield and Bromley and Beckenham attacked wide on this flank time after time.
At half time the score was still 0-0, so Susanna Scott (captain on the pitch) warned the team of plan B. If there was still no score after 10 minutes, we would push Bethan Dixon and Alex Bezant up front and Suzy Cole would step back to cover at right back. The tactic worked and with about 10 minutes to go Gail Arnott won the ball at right midfield, passed to Sue Scott in space. She spotted her sister free in the D and, from within our own half, launched a long through ball. Daisy cleverly pretended to intercept the pass, but allowed it to get through to Jo Mcleave, who only had the keeper to beat and did so with ease.
Sensible defending for the last few minutes meant we held on for a well deserved win.
Given the predominance of forwards in the team on paper, this was a victory masterminded by Susanna' shrewd tactics and won by a team giving 100 percent to Susanna and eachother. Well done everyone and also to our spectators for their support - Dave Sawyer and Mr Dixon.
