Ladies 1s versus Holcombe 1s

League, home, Saturday 27th October 2007
Lost: 4-7
Scorers: Emma Greenway x2, Vicky Ives, Anna Frizoni

With the league fixtures being played in a rather random order this season, this week’s fixture was against league leaders Holcombe again. Having lost 0-6 to them in the opening game of the season a few weeks ago, we were determined to put this behind us and get revenge with 3 points.

Unfortunately this didn’t go according to plan as we found ourselves 4-0 down in the opening 20 minutes! Not entirely sure what went happened apart from them coming out of the blocks a lot faster than us and seemingly scoring on every attack! I think it’s fair to say that we were somewhat shell-shocked and it took an almighty effort for us to lift ourselves and respond to the onslaught. But this we did and shortly afterwards managed to pull one back, courtesy of a well-worked short corner routine with Vicky Ives sweeping and Emma Greenway getting a slight touch to deflect past the keeper. For a period we had a renewed belief in ourselves and began to take a firmer grip on the game. We defended solidly with man of the match, Tara Woodward, having a particularly impressive game by containing their pacey right winger and putting in some excellent tackles. Despite this, we were unable to prevent Holcombe getting yet another and left us with a 5-1 deficit going into the break.

We were understandably a little glum at half time but an inspiring team talk gave us renewed determination to go out there and salvage some pride. If we got a couple of early goals back then who knows what could happen!

The second half ended up being a bit of a goal fest with Holcombe extending their lead almost immediately. Lesser teams would have rolled over and surrendered at this point but we responded immediately, this time Vicky Ives scoring herself from a short corner. For the next 10 minutes or so, BromBeck were in complete control and were unlucky not to close the gap even further. We were playing some lovely triangles and moving the ball around superbly…some of the best hockey we’ve played all season, in my opinion. Despite this Holcombe again broke quickly and extended their lead once more. Again, we were not to be disheartened and ceased control of the game once more. Our excellent play finally paid off as we scored 2 quick goals. These were again from short corners and proved that practice really does make perfect! Our third goal was almost a carbon copy of the first, with Emma Greenway getting the final touch from a perfectly placed ball from Vicky Ives. The fourth was another well-worked routine with Anna Frizoni calmly slotting in from close range. At this point, with 12 minutes left on the clock, Holcombe began to look a little panicked and started to make a few unnecessary errors as we put them under pressure. It was end to end stuff and despite having a few half chances to reduce the deficit even more, Holcombe’s class and earlier goal scoring rout carried them through. Final score 4-7 to Holcombe.

Although we lost, I think everyone came off the pitch feeling extremely proud of our second half performance and we can take a lot of positives from this. To respond how we did after our abysmal start showed a lot of character and sensational team spirit. We can also feel proud that we managed to put 4 goals past them, which going in to the game was the total they’d conceded all season! So well done to everyone and let’s take the 2nd half performance into our game next week against Tunbridge Wells.

Special mention must go to young keeper, Nat Thomas, who agreed to play for us. Despite conceding 7 goals, she must have saved twice as many at least and should walk away with her head held high. Thanks also must go to all the supporters… think that’s the most we’ve had this season so thanks, it really does help!

Man of the match: Tara Woodward

Team: Nat Thomas (GK), Tara Woodward, Chris McNeill, Sarah Phelps, Tash Kenny, Lucy Shepherd, Vicky Ives, Anna Frizoni, Susie Ramsey, Emma Greenway, Sarah Crosley, Katy Motson
