Horsham White Lions Success for Mixed under 11s

Although we drew against Teddington and then won every other match without conceding a goal, the rules state that places are awarded on goals scored. Teddington were tied on points with us, but had scored two more goals, so were therefore awarded gold, and we had to settle for second place and silver again.
We were obviously disappointed with the result, but we worked very hard as a team, and have to be proud of the fact that we did not lose a match.

Under 9's success at Horsham White Lions

Bromley and Beckenham carried on a tradition of success at the Horsham tournament by becoming joint winners of this tournament on March 11th.

Paul Wilson writes:

"We were in the tougher pool group with three strong and very well matched teams - Teddington A, Havant and Brombecks. The results between these clubs determined the first three positions in the pool. Although we lost to Teddington in a game where we took the lead we were offered a lifeline when Teddington lost their final group match to Havant. We then needed to beat Havant which we did 2-0 with our best team performance of the competition. The pool placings were decided on countback and we finished top by virtue of scoring more goals (9 whereas Teddington and Havant scored 8 each).

In the final we were camped around the Lewes goal for virtually the whole match but despite a series of near misses were unable to force a winner even after 5 minutes of extra time. We did have a couple of scares from breaks but some solid defending prevented a Lewes goal.

Overall a fantastic achievement from the youngest and smallest squad in the competition. Five of the eight players scored which reflects the level of team play."

Despite being a mixed tournament some of the above teams had few if any girls playing.
Hence Bromley and Beckenham made it to the playoffs for the genuinely mixed teams participating.

Semi Final
v Old Georgian Dragons (nice name for a team on St George's Day) won 1-0 (Anthony Brown again)

The final was against Burgess Hill. The Brombeck team showed courage and reserve being strong in both defence and attack. All day they fought hard and made many chances and attacks on goal forcing a couple of quick short corners, but at full time it was evens at 0-0 and due to the overrun of the previous games the tournament officials decided on 5 minutes extra time with a golden goal to decide the winner.
With this the team started strongly and forced a few attacks, they also had to defend a couple of quick breaks, but they covered well and a brilliant team effort of passing and dribbling was rewarded by a well taken goal by Edward Tate, sliding it past their goalkeeper, who had been strong all day.

Tom Martin had a few quiet games in goal as the team made constant attacks on the opposition's goals, but he did have to make a few good saves when our goal was attacked including a few spetacular sliding tackles.

All in all, an excellent performance - the boys and girls played extremely well in all their games. They had not played together as a team this season, but nobody would have known this. They listened to advice, they worked hard for eachother, making space and moving quickly on and off the ball. The defence was solid, the attacks swift and short corners taken well - often only being denied by some good goalkeeping. They grew in confidence with every game. Their coaches would have been proud of the way they played - they have listened and learned alot from them in the past 6 months.

Mini Hockey Fun Day - March 26th

There will be another mini hockey fun day at the club (Foxgrove Road) on Sunday March 26th starting at 10:30 till approximately midday. If you normally have u8/u10/u11 or u12 training that day, this will take the place of normal practice.
Don't forget to bring your boots as we will be playing on grass.
Following the success of the Christmas fun day, we have managed to book both pitches so there will be plenty of hockey for everyone.
There are some club shirts left, so if you have not already bought one this is your last chance to buy one at the discounted rate of ten pounds.
In addition the club will be selling hot drinks and refreshments.

ASHFORD U12 MINI TOURNAMENT 12/2/06

The under 11 boys used this u12 tournament as a warm up for the most important event of the year - the Kent Mini Championships.

The boys opened with a 2-0 win over Ashford A (scorers: Bezant and Edwards)
followed by an impressive 5-0 over Marden Russetts (scorers: Bezant 2, Goodall 2, Tromp)
mysteriously struggled slightly with a 1-0 victory over Ashford B (scorer: Goodall)

This was a very encouraging display by the under 11s who have consistently won all their games in the u12 tournaments, however we knew that the Kent Championship would be altogether tougher, especially as 2 key players - Jamie McCulloch and Matthew Dyer would be unavailable since they would be representing their school in the Surrey version of these national championships. As Tom Martin is 12 as well there was also the question of who would play in goal for the under 11s!

In the meantime we had a mixed tournament at the prestigious White Lions event in Horsham.

HORSHAM WHITE LIONS MIXED U11 TOURNAMENT

Feb 19th was the coldest and wettest day of the year so far - ask any of the players and their parents!

This was the first mixed tournament for the under 11s since their practice times had been split up, however the team didn't take long to get into their stride with 4 wins and 1 draw in the pool matches, with the girls also showing their scoring prowess:

This put our team in the final against a strong Horsham, and despite much the stronger attacking moves of Bromley and Beckenham, Horsham managed to score against the run of play and the final ended at 1-0, with Brombecks feeling slightly disappointed.

KENT U11 CHAMPIONSHIPS 26/2

On an even colder, but sunny day at Ashford our u11 boys competed for the biggest prize of the season. A big thank you for all the parents who made the journey and especially to Adrian Ware,
the coach who came to support and help even though his son is now too old to take part. Thanks also to Mark Edwards, who took some great action shots of the matches, see them here : finals match photo's.

Bromley and Beckenham started off their pool matches with an impressive win over Sevenoaks A winning 3-0 (Mears, Bezant 2)
This was followed by a 1-0 win over Ashford Bs (Goodall) and another 1-0 win over Wickham Common Primary (Mears)
The toughest match was against Herne Bay, when Brombecks were pinned in their own half for much of the time. However, a 0-0 draw was enough to secure Brombecks top of the table position.

The first set of quarter finals went to penalty flicks, with Marian Vian school showing Herne Bay just how it should be done. Perhaps this encouraged our boys to make sure they got that all importand goal in open play. Our quater final was against Canterbury, which we won 1-0 nil with a clever goal by Benjamin Bezant. Next came Ashford in the semi final, again a 1-0 victory avoided a p flick showdown. Peter Mears scored as he seemed to find renewed energy in the closing stages of the competion. So, in the final that left the team we had not looked forward to meeting - Marion Vian, coached by Nigel Lovegrove. The game was tough, but Bromley and Beckenham dominated the play having numerous short corners and chances to score. Marion Vian occasionally broke down the right and had a couple of short corners, which were nerve-racking for us, since our stand-in goalie had had very little to do up until that point. However, Oliver Syvaniemi dealt with anything Marion Vian could throw at him with great confidence and certainly did not look like someone who has never before played in goal!
About half way through the game, Peter Mears slotted the ball past the keeper for a deserved goal and Bromley and Beckenham never looked like giving away this advantage. The final whistle went amid whoops and hollers from players and parents alike.

The boys now go on to represent Kent in the South of England Finals on 23rd April - venue to be confirmed.

Bromley and Beckenham HC under 11 A team have started off the season as the Beckenham HC u10s ended the last - undefeated.

Brombecks hosted our first junior hockey tournament of the season in October with mixed under 9s, u11 girls and u11 boys playing against Wimbledon, Surbiton and Richmond. Our sheer weight of numbers means we are looking to Surrey as well as Kent to provide enough matches for our junior teams.

Our next outing took us to Oxted for one of the under 12 mini triangular tournaments organised chiefly in Kent. This time we were able to field 2 teams of under 11s whilst at home we hosted a tournament and fielded a further 2 teams of under 12s! The under 11 A team won all their games whilst the B team did not fare as well they put up a brave fight especially considering several team members had picked up a stick for the first time this September!

Finally on November 13^th we hosted a tournament for Marden and Maidstone. Unfortunately, Maidstone could not field a team, so Brombecks and Marden joined forces to provide a fourth team to enable the tournament to run smoothly. Once more the u11 A team were unbeaten and the most encouraging fact of all to emerge from the tournament was that the Brombecks B team put up the stiffest opposition to the A team. A very promising start to the season which has been matched by the under 12 boys. Unfortunately, an open Surrey tournament, which would have seen us pitted against the best teams and schools in Surrey had to be cancelled on Sunday 20^th November because of a frozen pitch. We await the rescheduled tournament with great anticipation.

Finally, a big thanks as always to all the coaches and parents who brave the elements every Sunday at 9am to support their sons be it at training or matches in the depths of Kent.

Kent League. Vs Gravesend. Won 14 - 0.
A one sided game against a spirited Gravesend team in their first Kent League appearance. Too many goalscorers to mention. No doubt there are tougher tests to come.

Under 16
Kent League. Vs Maidstone. Lost 5 - 0.
A difficult first match for the B team against a strong Maidstone team, but encouraging considering most have not played together before. With more experience better results will come.

Kent League. Vs Canterbury. Won 3 - 2.
Title decider in the first match ? End to end stuff in an evenly contested match between two good teams. Goals from Daisy Ridout (2) and Katie Lister swing it our way against traditional rivals.

Under 18
Home Counties League. Vs East Grinstead. Won 1 - 0.
Another high standard game between two well matched teams. A first half goal from Ashton Tame tilts balance to us. Further chances at both ends but strong defence and saves from Emma Morris ensure our win.

Match Report U14 BromBeck Boys Kent League v Marden

This was the first Kent league game for the newly merged Bromley/Beckenham U14 Boys. The squad was missing 8 players to county and regional training but still managed to turn out a formidable team consisting of Dan Smedley, James Forryan, Harry Beaven, Mark Vivien, Andrew Lenoard, John Roberts, Joss Herring, Will Harris, John Hodges, Harry Stones, Jack Bridger, Ben Tanner, Matt Holden. I will not name players on every match report, but I think it is useful in these early games so we are familiar with names.

The match start was delayed due to Marden's late arrival also there was an important 1st team match starting at 2pm ,so this games was shortened to 25 minute halves.

The emphasis on boys was to keep our shape and keep the marking tight together with previously rehearsed short corner routines, this paid off with the first and second goals by Jack Bridger then the third and fouth goals by Harry Stones and then the fifth goal by Will Harris making the final score 5-0 to Bromley/Beckenham.

I noticed Andrew Leonard played exceptionally well at centre half as did Harry Beaven as sweeper.

My thanks also go to all the players above who put in a very good performance which Myself and Doug were very proud of.
